The great religious teachers and the prophets of past ages were not extreme mystics. They were God-knowing men and women who best served their God by unselfish ministry to their fellow mortals. Jesus often took his apostles away by themselves for short periods to engage in meditation and prayer, but for the most part he kept them in service contact with the multitudes. The soul of man requires spiritual exercise as well as spiritual nourishment.

Prayer may be a spontaneous expression of God-consciousness. It may be the ecstatic praise of a God knowing soul. It is sometimes the expression of spiritual craving. Prayer may be joyous praise or a humble plea for forgiveness. Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Page 1002
God answers the soul's attitude, not the words.

Mary, Mother of Jesus of Nazareth, calls this thought and feeling.

You surrender every wish of mind and every craving of soul to the transforming embrace of spiritual growth. You experience an enhancement of meanings and an elevation of values. When you make GOD your burden-bearer, then you have peace. When you make your neighbor responsible, you do not have peace, for in the neighbor - or family member - you have doubt and not peace, sometimes hope, an energy that can lead to peace, which definitely occurs when you include GOD.

Conscience is not a divine voice speaking to the human soul. It is merely the sum total of the moral and ethical content of the mores of any current stage of existence; it simply represents the humanly conceived ideal of reaction in any given set of circumstances.

Page 1029
The contaminating beliefs which could have become fastened upon what may have been an emerging monotheism, none was so stultifying as this belief in transmigration--the doctrine of the reincarnation of souls into animals and insects which are also mortal or carnal. This idea of reincarnation has a different slant. It is not transmigration of Souls but the Teachings of Karma from a primitive perspective. We no longer call this reincarnation. We now call it Karma.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. We currently say "Karma is now".

Genesis 1:12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

The karma principle of causality continuity is, again, very close to the truth of the repercussional synthesis of all time-space actions in the Deity presence of the Supreme; but this postulate never provided for the coordinate personal attainment of Deity by the individual religionist, only for the ultimate engulfment of all personality by the Universal Oversoul.

Luke 13:2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? Luke 13:5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent (remember GOD), ye shall all likewise perish. "Think ye" has repercussional synthesis.

In the doctrine of the merging of the self with the Oversoul, some theologians failed to provide for the survival of something human, something new and unique, something born of the union of the will of man and the will of God. Hinduism includes Hu-man as being GOD in the Soul, as we call it and the transformation from Earth-mind dependencies to Spiritual realities (liberty).

A Hindu Teaching:

If we associate with spiritual life then we shall develop a spiritual body. As soon as we get a spiritual body there is no question of changing it. If we always keep ourself spiritually engaged our body will act spiritually or become spiritualized although material. It is just like an iron rod put into fire becomes like fire although iron. It will be red-hot if we touch it anywhere and it will burn. Therefore it takes on the quality of fire. There will be no more material demands.

The teaching of the soul's return to the Brahman is closely parallel to the truth of the Christ returning to the bosom of the Universal Father, but there is something distinct from Christ Consciousness which also survives, the counterpart of social personality.

Gautama, of course, made a valiant fight against the time-honored belief in transmigration of the soul. He made a noble effort to deliver men from fear, to make them feel at ease and at home in the great universe.

The confusion arises when the Soul is able to take on the appearance of objects or animals. Numbers 22:28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times? Stories such as this one in the Bible add to confusion. GOD, spirit and your own Soul have the potential of all lower creation. Wherever you are in consciousness brings a level of communication that matches that level. There are stores of inanimate objects speaking to people. We have this in the Greek symbol of the sybil, or in the Arabian Nights where a mirror speaks to a person, similar to the Sleeping Beauty story in children's Fairy Tales. To move out of this confusion, we must know from deep within ourselves that GOD does the impossible. At this point of acceptance, you enter into a dialogue with GOD and receive comprehensible answers concerning such unique occurrences in the experiences of sentient beings.

In Palestine the wisdom and all-pervasiveness of God was often grasped but seldom his love and mercy. The Yahweh of these times "sends evil spirits to dominate the souls of his enemies" 1Samuel 16:14; he prospers his own and obedient children, while he curses and visits dire judgments upon all others. "He disappoints the devices of the crafty; he takes the wise in their own deceit." Job 5:12 You live your choices whether true or deceitful - this is GOD allowing "free will" and for you to learn to put GOD - Truth 'first' for the results of more stable life conditions.

Only at Ur did a voice arise to cry out the mercy of God, saying: "He shall pray to God and shall find favor with him and shall see his face with joy, for God will give to man divine righteousness." Proverbs 3:4 Thus from Ur there is preached salvation, divine favor, by faith: "He is gracious to the repentant and says, `Deliver him from going down in the pit, for I have found a ransom.' Job 33:24 If any say, `I have sinned and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not,' Job 33:27 God will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and he shall see the light." Job 33:28

Speaking to the fear-ridden and soul-hungry Hebrews, this prophet said: "Arise and shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you." Isaiah 60:1 "The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach good tidings to the meek; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound." Isaiah 61:1 "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation and has covered me with his robe of righteousness." Isaiah 61:10 "In all their afflictions he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them." Isaiah 63:9

This Isaiah was followed by Micah and Obadiah, who confirmed and embellished his soul-satisfying gospel. And these two brave messengers boldly denounced the priest-ridden ritual of the Hebrews and fearlessly attacked the whole sacrificial system. Micah denounced "the rulers who judge for reward and the priests who teach for hire and the prophets who divine for money." Micah 3:11 He taught of a day of freedom from superstition and priestcraft, saying: "But every man shall sit under his own vine, and no one shall make him afraid, for all people will live, each one according to his understanding of God." Micah 4:4

To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. Isaiah 1:11 Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these? Isaiah 57:6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Micah 6:6 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? Micah 6:7 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8

This preacher of a supernal God never ceased to proclaim this God of love. "I dwell in the high and holy place, also with him who is of a contrite and humble spirit." Isaiah 57:15 And still further words of comfort did this great teacher speak to his contemporaries: "And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your soul. You shall be like a watered garden and like a spring whose waters fail not. And if the enemy shall come in like a flood, the spirit of the Lord will lift up a defense against him." Isaiah 58:11

The Greeks, sought for the solace of the soul in deep thinking, philosophy and metaphysics. They turned from the contemplation of self preservation-salvation to self realization and self understanding.

Page 1079
He taught one God, another did recognize a First Cause, an Initial Mind. Socrates and his successors, Plato and Aristotle, taught that virtue is knowledge; goodness, health of the soul; that it is better to suffer injustice than to be guilty of it, that it is wrong to return evil for evil, and that the gods are wise and good. Their cardinal virtues were: wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice.

The soul of man, as never before in the world's history, carefully scrutinizes its charts of morality and observes the compass of religious guidance. The paramount mission of religion as a social influence is to stabilize the ideals of mankind during these dangerous times of transition from one phase of civilization to another, from one level of culture to another.

Pages 1095 1096
Religious experience is markedly influenced by physical health, inherited temperament, and social environment. But these temporal conditions do not inhibit inner spiritual progress by a soul dedicated to the liberty of the Father in heaven, as on Earth. There are present in all normal entities certain innate drives toward growth and self realization which are functional. The sure technique of fostering this endowment of spiritual growth is to maintain an attitude of wholehearted devotion to supreme values.

Religion can progress to that level of experience whereon it becomes an enlightened and wise technique of spiritual reaction to the universe. Such a glorified religion functions in human personality: the intellectual, and the spiritual in the soul, and with the indwelling spirit.

Jesus portrayed the profound surety of the God knowing individual when he said: "To a God knowing believer, what does it matter if all things Earthly crash?" Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Temporal securities are vulnerable, but spiritual sureties are impregnable. When the flood tides of human adversity, selfishness, cruelty, hate, malice, and jealousy beat about the self, you may rest in the assurance that there is one inner citadel of the spirit, which is absolutely unassailable; and this is true of every Soul who has dedicated the being to the indwelling spirit of the eternal God.

Religion is an impulse for organizing the soul with dynamic service. It is the enlistment of the totality of selfhood in the loyal service of loving God and serving man. Religion pays any price essential to the attainment of the supreme goal, the eternal prize. There is a consecrated completeness in religious loyalty which is superbly sublime. And these loyalties are socially effective and spiritually progressive. (Webster's dynamic: an underlying cause of change or growth.)

Pages 1097 1098
The association of actuals and potentials equals growth, the experiential realization of values. But growth is not mere progress. Progress is always meaningful, but it is relatively valueless without growth. The supreme value of human life consists in growth of values, progress in meanings, and realization of the cosmic interrelatedness of both of these experiences. Such an experience is the equivalent of God-consciousness. Such a mortal, while not supernatural, is truly becoming superhuman; an immortal soul is inner GOD. (see Nietsche's Superman)

The great problem of religious living consists in the task of unifying the soul powers of the personality by the dominance of LOVE. Health, mental efficiency, and happiness arise from the unification of physical systems, mind systems, and spirit systems. Of health and sanity man understands much, but of happiness he has truly realized very little. The highest happiness is indissolubly linked with spiritual progress. Spiritual growth yields lasting joy, peace which passes all understanding. Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
