In 1977, I was sitting in my house and dieing of some unknown disease.
I was suicidal because I was very sick and wanted to be free of a failing
body. I had to go to the welfare office and get food stamps, I was
not working and was under the doctor's care, sort of. I prayed and
meditated daily for relief, for money, for support. I was OK.
One day, as I was painting my self protrait, prior to my appointment at
the county, I stopped and looked out the window, as a shadow had fallen and
gave me the idea that it might rain. There was a huge window-sized
face looking at me through the window. I thought it was our neighborhood
clown who walked around on stilts and entertained the children while advertising
a product, toys or candy or ice cream. I had never seen him look into
anyone's window before and was almost insulted, but I also thought maybe
he just glanced my way. At almost the same time, my neighbors downstairs
began screaming as if a monster had attacked them; their screams were like
sounds from a horror movie.
The face in the window moved... I ran downstairs to see what was the matter.
On the second floor, I saw a waist that should have had a belt on, but maybe
not... just my perception. On the first floor, I saw knees in pants.
These were the screaming neighbors. They had all fallen on their knees
and began to pray to Jesus, Mary, GOD and the saints. They were promising
GOD that they would stop drinking and using drugs. One of them came
to me at the doorway and said "See that!" he pointed towards the knees. He
continued "We know this is a message from GOD to get our lives right! I'm
moving from here and will never return to this kind of life." They all agreed
and began to help him pack. He would not listen to my useless reasoning...
I don't even remember what I said... just drivel...
I went back to my apartment and the face was leaving. I went to
my appointment. My neighbor moved the next day.
