Sickness to Death

Alta came home and found me standing there looking at the curtained window. He opened up the curtain and looked. The room was empty of everyone except Helen and Ra.  They were dancing and kissing each other. He closed the curtain. He was used to me not being at the party all night so he had not been alarmed when I left.  He cheerfully said to me, "coming to bed?" I did not answer. I stood silently staring at the curtain. He went up to bed.

The next morning I got up and fixed breakfast and began reading in Alta's office. I had decided that I wanted to move and committed myself to making him a good wife. At about 9AM his first business meeting was due. Our butler let in the visitor and I went upstairs to get Alta. He was pale.  We sent for the town physician.  The doctor and our maid sent Alta's business associates away as they came calling, one by one.

The doctor did not know what was wrong but would come by again later. After many days and weeks, I was low on money and did not know how to access my husband's money. I dismissed our servants, closed up the house save the kitchen and the bedroom. I wrote my mom, knowing she would send me money if I needed it. If he died, I would go home. Then I began to worry. I could not leave him. All this was my fault.
