The next morning, we talked. It seems while his wife was ill, he exhausted
most of his money. At his wife's funeral, he was given money by a very wealthy
family, who's daughter had lost a husband. He began to take tea with her
at her place and his, but they did not go out together. She proposed, knowing
his finances were low. He accepted because he knew he would run out of money
soon, he wanted to make his own way, so they decided to sell his house and
hers and move. This way they could keep up their appearances. He would not
tell me where they had planned to live. We went to breakfast in the hotel;
then he took me home to London.
At my place he gave me $30,000 and told me to keep it until he could
no longer provide for me. I did not see him after that, but his barrister
brought me a check each week, telling me that this would not go on forever
and I should look for someone else to take care of me. He was a friendly
fellow, did not know I was a prostitute, and thought I would make someone
a fine wife if I made myself available. One day he announced that this was
my last allowance and that Ra Atl would be married on Sunday. Both
Ra's house and Helen's had been sold. He would not tell me where the
wedding would be.
